Ms. Nakada's Blog for guest speaker Eva Nathanson

Agenda
Guest speaker Eva Nathanson

HW: RJ 7.1-7.4 due pages 371-384

What a day we had in class today. We got started right away with Eva Nathanson, a Holocaust survivor, sharing her story during World War II in Hungary. She spoke about her grandfather who was helping Jews, and when he was caught they were punished by being taken away.

She and her mother survived because they hid. They were caught a couple of times and the last time, they were there, at the Danube, right at the end of the war and stood before a firing squad. One of the men recognized her mother and spared them so they could testify for them after the war. They were left there, along the river with the dead, but survived so they could testify.

She came to the US when she was 16. Hungary, under communism, was pretty similar to living under the Nazis. They had to change their names from Rosenberg because it was too germanic. She described the game they had to play to survive under communism, paying off bribes and such.

She talked about her nightmares and how they haunt her when traumatic things happen, how when you survive such traumatic experience, you have issues. There are things that still haunt her, certain smells and claustrophobia. She always notices exits and eats and going to the bathroom quickly.

After the war, her parents hid the truth from her because she was so sick after the war. She couldn't even talk about it for years. It took years for her to say that she was a survivor.

When she found out her father had been killed and her step-father wasn't her real father, she was devastated. Her mother and step-father were the two people she trusted. She survived this trauma and the teenage years by reading. She overcame her dyslexia or writing difficulties by memorizing things.

93% of her family was killed during the Holocaust.

She talked about how her Jewish practice changed after the War, how she keeps her faith in her own way, and how she tries to be a good person. She was always glad she was a Jew.

At the end of the war, the hiding was easier. They didn't have to be quite as hidden. The Russians liberated them and gave them chocolate.

She is glad to be here in America but is concerned about any continuing oppression and growing antisemitism in Europe.

Eva spoke about the most frightening experiences she's had from standing before the firing squad, a tank in front of her home by the communists, and being held at gunpoint while being robbed.

When asked about how she deals with other Holocaust stories, books, movies, and hearing other stories she said she thinks it's important, but doesn't want to wallow in the awful details.

She talked about all of the impacts her experiences from early childhood have on her still today. She does everything fast and still can't cry because of staying silent through all of those years in hiding.

Eva, your visit was so inspiring. Thank you so much for sharing your courageous journey with all of us.

Khai's Third Blog

Agenda:BLOG
The Book Thief
HW: 7.2 pg.336-350

Hey this is my third blog and I was hoping I could somehow avoid it but I knew that wasn't going to happen. Right now Ms. Nakada just reminded us about our class goal. everyone has to get a C or better. Honey you need to do your work. jk. We're writing the notes for the book thief now and death just said that Rudy dies. He said that he didn't deserve to die the way he did. I don't know how he died but he probably deserved it...jk..no one deserves to die... I'm pretty sure there's someone but no one I know lol. Did Max just get a paper cut or something because he just got up out of nowhere. Anyway, back to the notes: Liesel gives Max a haircut, she gives Max a newspaper, she describes the weather to him. Ms. Nakada is reading now so the notes will continue in about twenty seconds. *counts down from twenty* And we're back: Max prepares to fight the Fuhrer, Liesel tells Max about his training, Max makes a new book, The Mayor's wife fires Rosa. Now Ms. Nakada is reading the part when Liesel is yelling a the mayor's wife. Everyone thought that was when she was at her best. I think it was kind of mean. She talked about her  dead son. I bet she wouldn't like it if someone talked about her brother like that or her mom like when she kept checking the mailbox for a letter from her mom. If Hans said that was pathetic she would be pretty hurt. Suprisingly, Rosa doesn't beat her with a wooden spoon like I thought she would. I just realized this is probably going to be the longest blog I've ever done. I'm off topic. Back to the notes: Rudy gets extra drills in Hitler youth for defending Tommy. Someone calls Liesel the "S word"  is that even really a bad word or is it just one of those words "that's not for kids" any way Viktor calls Liesel a *bleep*.  Okay, I think I missed something but I think they're talking about Max's new book. bell just rang. there's a sub tomorrow by the way. Thursday a Holocaust survivor guy is coming to the class. Shout out to Honey, Zaharah and Nyla. They're my best friends!!

Brisa's third blog

Agenda
Blog
Andrew Jackson Structured debate
Readers/writers workshop
H.W - R.J 7.1
T.B.T p.317 -335

So right now Ms. Nakada just collected the essays that were supposed to be done by yesterday. Now she's explaining the do's and dont's for the debate. There is pretty much more dont's then do because we're a pretty crazy class.  Zeyna is the first to present her I.C.E.  I  remember when we were looking for the stuff for the i.c.e, I would find more bad than good information about Andrew Jackson. People are trying to counter Zeyna's and Riley is going crazy. Lol shout out to Riley because we play like that.  Did everyone see Diana's new haircut  like whoa and you know I got a haircut too I wanted the tips done. People are mainly getting their villian information from A Young People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn.  Maytal just got me thinking saying that Jackson is like a mask murder by knowingly killing of the Indians by sending them on the Trail of Tears. She also got me thinking about that hat. I'm just like its not that could its actually a bit warm, but it's huge.  Whoa Mr. Hayden needs to calm down because I can hear him yelling. Oh! I got the hook up. Diana just waved a kit kat bar under the desk and was all like for you. Thanks boo I bet its good. Isai has a eye problem  every time I look over at him he has his finger on it he should go to the nurse.

Pictures with the class buddies. Hold up christian is getting heated right now trying to prove that Jackson is no better than Hitler. I think everyone has their own view of Jackson, but at the end  he is a hero and a villain. Riley just straight up thinks he isnt a good guy. Well Bye class.

The is finally quiet and i don't know what to write about anymore. I think I'm not suppose to say this but, I'm bored. Ha ha Michael just got moved to the seat in front of me and he just got in trouble for not doing RJ. I'm not trying to be mean but this kid is dumb. Now we are starting on the debate.
